APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Purchasing Agent to execute, on behalf of the Sheriff-Coroner, a purchase order
with Proforce Law Enforcement in an amount not to exceed $113,300 for the purchase of tasers for the Custody
Services Bureau of the Sheriff's Office.
FISCAL IMPACT:
$113,300. 100% Budgeted 2590-2479.
BACKGROUND:
The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff currently authorizes the use of electronic weapons. Electronic weapons
are used to control dangerous and violent subjects. The use of electronic weapons allows deputies to control and
diffuse violent situations sooner, potentially resulting in fewer injuries to both deputies and the subjects. Taser
International devices are the only devices authorized by Sheriff’s Office policy and may be used only after receiving
training in its use.
The Custody Services Division has a very limited supply of Taser devices for staff to use. The Sheriff’s Office has
requested a price quote from ProForce Law Enforcement; the sole authorized distributer for

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
Taser International products on the west coast. This quote is for the purchase of 90 Taser electronic devices and the
required accessories for their use. The quote includes the purchase of holsters to issue each deputy assigned to
Custody Services. The holsters will allow Tasers to be both easily and quickly exchanged between deputies. The 90
Taser devices are to be used as “pool” weapons, issued at the beginning and returned at the end of a shift. This
purchase will allow every trained deputy sheriff assigned to the Custody Services Bureau to be issued a Taser device
during their shift.
Funding for this purchase is already allocated.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The Sheriff's Office will be unable to purchase tasers from Proforce.
