BACKGROUND:
The Catholic Parish of St. Peter of Verona was established on Nov. 1, 1914 in the City of Pittsburg by members of
the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Francisco. During that time, it has served the physical
and spiritual needs of its members and the surrounding community, several waves of immigrant peoples made up of
various races, nationalities and ethnicities and has sought to integrate these groups into the broader American
mainstream and the Parish community.
For generations, the Parish and Church of St. Peter has served as a social, cultural and spiritual center for the City of
Pittsburg with community-wide celebrations and events and religious observances. It was the only Catholic church in
Pittsburg up until 1965, when another Catholic church was built in the southern part of the city.
On Nov. 1, 2014, the St. Peter of Verona Parish will begin a six month celebration commemorating its 100th Year
