HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10212014 - C.22RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve FISCAL IMPACT: None BACKGROUND: The Catholic Parish of St. Peter of Verona was established on Nov. 1, 1914 in the City of Pittsburg by members of the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Francisco. During that time, it has served the physical and spiritual needs of its members and the surrounding community, several waves of immigrant peoples made up of various races, nationalities and ethnicities and has sought to integrate these groups into the broader American mainstream and the Parish community. For generations, the Parish and Church of St. Peter has served as a social, cultural and spiritual center for the City of Pittsburg with community-wide celebrations and events and religious observances. It was the only Catholic church in Pittsburg up until 1965, when another Catholic church was built in the southern part of the city. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: The celebrations in connection to the 100th anniversary of the Parish of St. Peter of Verona will have hundreds of children in attendance. The recognition from the county will reinforce the importance of the values and morals as taught by the Church that encourages good citizenship, community involvement, tolerance and helping those who are less fortunate.
