APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of
$2600 from Dow Chemical Corporation to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
learning materials and programming at the Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries for the period March 1, 2015 through
March 31, 2016.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No Library Fund match.
BACKGROUND:
Dow Community Grants are designed to fund projects that support hands-on science and math learning, and
contribute to the community’s success in the areas of educational opportunities and environmental protection. The
Pittsburg and Bay Point Community Libraries grant project will allow the implementation of monthly STEM
programs at the Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries for children to be engaged in hands-on experiments in STEM fields.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The Pittsburg and Bay Point Community Libraries will not participate in the grant.

CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The grant will provide direct educational benefit to children ages 5-14 by providing hands-on STEM learning
experiences that support Common Core standards. The grant will support students with essential math and science
skills required for academic success, and establish the Pittsburg and Bay Point Libraries as STEM resource sites for
children to obtain STEM resources. As a result of academic success students will be prepared for a productive
adulthood.
