HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09162014 - C.21RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $500 from Healthy and Active Before 5 to provide nutrition programming to children at the El Cerrito Library for the period June 1, 2014 through May 31, 2015. FISCAL IMPACT: No Library Fund match. BACKGROUND: Contra Costa County Library supports the goal of reducing obesity in children ages 0-5 through programming that informs wise food choices in a learning setting. The El Cerrito Library, in applying for this grant, will provide nutrition literacy information and healthy snacks at library programs for children ages 0-5. Programming will provide important information to families, parents and caregivers so they are able to make wise food choices. The resulting programming will also create a partnership between the Library and Healthy and Active Before 5 thereby providing a key community forum for this important issue. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: Nutrition programming will not occur if funds are not received. Increased nutrition literacy provides children, families and caregivers with critical information on the role of food in sustaining children's ability to concentrate and learn effectively. 2. By providing nutrition literacy and healthy food choices at an early age, children will be better prepared to make informed nutrition choices in adulthood. 5.By providing programs that promote a healthy environment for children and families, the library will model good choices with community members. Partnering with Healthy and Active Before 5 promotes a high quality of life for children and families.
