HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09092014 - PR.1RECOMMENDATION(S): PRESENTATION of response to a 3-alarm, multi-agency fire incident in the City of Lafayette. FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact. BACKGROUND: At 6:20 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014, multiple units and agencies responded to a reported residential structure fire at 1190 Monticello Road in Lafayette. While en route to the call, Engine 17 (Lafayette) reported a large column of black smoke seen from one mile away. Dispatch advised that the fire was spreading to the vegetation. Upon arrival, Engine 17 reported “heavy fire from the alpha and charlie side of a one-story house establishing Monticello Incident Command (IC).” Approximately 18 seconds later Monticello IC (Engine 17) requested a second alarm. Approximately 2 minutes and 6 seconds later Monticello IC (Engine 17) requested a third alarm. At this time Engine 15 (Lafayette) was committed to a vehicle accident on Highway 24 eastbound. The fire spread rapidly to the vegetation, consuming one-two acres and threatening homes on Glenn Road, and burning the deck and an out building of a home on Presher Drive. The response of firefighting crews in the face of the closure of Station 16 in Lafayette was critical to keeping this fire from becoming much larger. No citizens or firefighters were injured during this incident. The home on Monticello Road sustained major damage including $400,000 to the structure and the loss of approximately $300,000 in contents. The home on Presher Drive sustained $10,000 in damage. Units from Contra Costa County Fire Protection District stations in Martinez and Concord and units from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District covered empty stations in Lafayette and Walnut Creek.
