HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06242014 - C.79RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Director, or designee, on behalf of the Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County, to execute a contract with Green Visions: Center for Renewable Energy in an amount not to exceed $204,000, to provide project management and workforce development services for the period July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. FISCAL IMPACT: $204,000, 100% Federal; Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge (AMJIAC) Grant. BACKGROUND: In early October 2012, it was announced that the Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County and its partners were awarded of one of ten (10) national grants under the highly competitive federal Advanced Manufacturing Jobs Innovation Accelerator Challenge (AMJIAC) solicitation. The Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County is the lead agency on this project; other partners in the East Bay Biomedical Manufacturing Network partners include UC Berkeley, Laney College, The Corporation for Manufacturing Excellence (Manex), and the Northern California Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which is the lead agency for both the Alameda and Contra Costa SBDCs. As the contractor to the WDB, Green Visions is helping to expand technology transfer, innovation, and job creation in the regional medical manufacturing and bio-sciences cluster – closing feedback loops between tech development, market application, and business growth, including access to capital, technical assistance and workforce training for East Bay businesses. Additional activities include industry cluster development; leadership in convening and connecting industry employers to technology; specialized small business assistance; assess industry needs; support advanced manufacturing training; and facilitating access to incumbent worker services. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: Job seekers will have less opportunities for employment in the medical device and bioscience manufacturing industry. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: This Contract will support two of the five community outcomes established in the Children’s Report Card, 3) “Families that are Economically Self Sufficient” and 4) “Families that are Safe, Stable and Nurturing” by upgrading job skills and providing opportunity for employment to move toward self sufficiency.
