There are two vacancies in the Fleet Maintenance Division and we need to hire those personnel as soon as possible. There are very few trained fire mechanics in the job market, therefore Chief Broschard is developing a plan to hire entry level mechanics and train them to become fire mechanics. ∑The District is having on-going meetings with Sheriff Livingston and his staff regarding joint operations for water rescue and helicopter operations. Their staff has been very welcoming and we are making progress on conducting joint operations with each agency s resources. ∑District staff is working hard to fill vacancies created as a result of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant award and as a result of retirements subsequent to the recent judgment on the lawsuit concerning the implementation of pension legislation (Assembly Bill 197). The District currently has approximately 40 suppression vacancies and mandatory overtime is at an all-time high. All avenues are being explored to hire as expeditiously as possible. A recruit fire academy started on May 27. These recruits are scheduled to graduate in September. Depending on the graduation success rate, it is anticipated that the recruits will fill approximately half of the District s current suppression vacancies. Unfortunately, it appears the District will have to endure what is anticipated to be a very long and devastating fire season with the current number of vacancies. ∑The District is continuing to pursue several revenue possibilities including an emergency medical services (EMS) fee-for-service program. That program could net the District approximately $1 million annually. In addition, the District has asked the Board of Directors to pursue competing for the transport ambulance contract in late 2014. The Board gave approval for the District to hire a consultant to study the feasibility of this endeavor and the District has awarded the contract to Gary Board of Directors June 10, 2014 Page 2 Ludwig, a nationally recognized EMS expert. It is anticipated the study will be complete in late June and a report back to the Board by mid-July. ∑The District promoted five company officers: Will Pigeon, Jacob Peeff, Elia Ala'ilima, Chris Toler, and Kevin Stewart. We also promoted three Battalion Chiefs: Eddie Gonzalez, Lou Manzo, and Pete Marshall. These new Captains and Battalion Chiefs are all smart, talented people who will add value to the organization and provide leadership long into the future. ∑The District is working to create a single performance report that will suffice for both the Board of Directors and the Fire Commissioners to eliminate duplication. An example will be presented at the next meeting.
