HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06172014 - C.41RECOMMENDATION(S):
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a Library Services Technology Act
“Pitch An Idea” grant in the amount of $100,210 from California State Library to produce a Veterans Community
Story/Exhibit, for the period July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No Library Fund match.
BACKGROUND:
California State Library LSTA “Pitch An Idea” grant will allow the library to collect and present the story of Contra
Costa County veterans, through an online exhibit of veteran memorial tattoos. The exhibit will provide an authentic
way for veterans to present their individual experiences while providing an informative community story. War Ink
will provide the opportunity for veterans to tell their story, and for the civilian community to understand the
importance of their being witness to the value and experience of their community members. To ensure that veterans
tell their most authentic story, the exhibit will utilize their memorial tattoos as an entry point to their narrative,
allowing them to share the story they've already elected to literally exhibit on their person. Their story, told their way.
Contra Costa County community members will gain insight into veteran cultural values, experience, as well as honor
their military sacrifice--all critical elements of veteran reintegration. Additional libraries in California will have the
opportunity to participate and will extend Contra Costa County Library’s War Ink exhibit to additional veterans and
to the broader community.
