HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05132014 - C.35RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant for Pittsburg Library in the amount of $5000 from the State of California, Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) to create music workshops, programs, and provide music-related materials and services for the period July 1, 2014 through July 1, 2015. FISCAL IMPACT: No Library Fund match. BACKGROUND: This LSTA grant is awarded by the State of California as part of the Eureka! Leadership Institute, a fellowship program for developing 32 emerging library leaders each year from libraries throughout the state. “Music Quest” was created by a Community Library Manager as the culminating application of newly developed leadership skills to meet community needs. The grant will support the library’s goal to provide music instruction and musical instrument use in the library and will provide an opportunity for teens in the community to create peer relationships and gain confidence. Music Quest will be implemented at the library as a way to supplement the need for low-income teens to be exposed to music and arts experiences. Grant funds for the Music Quest project will make possible free guitar and vocal workshops for teens that will connect them with musical instruments, singing, and music theory. A collection of books and materials that focus on musicians and music careers will be added to the library collection. In addition, the library will coordinate with a local music academy to create a showcase performance that will unite teens with their peers and foster a love for music and reading. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: The Library will not implement the proposal. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: Children and Youth Healthy and Preparing for Productive Adulthood: Music helps teens to think creatively, communicate effectively, and also contributes toward the improvement of standardized test scores and increases higher graduation rates. Skills learned as a result of Music Quest enriches young lives and contributes toward a productive adulthood.
