HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05132014 - C.34RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $1,000 from Shell Martinez Refinery to provide reading incentives for the Kids Summer Reading Program at the Martinez Library for the period June 14, 2014 through August 23, 2014. FISCAL IMPACT: No Library Fund match. BACKGROUND: Each year the Library offers its popular Summer Reading Program to adults, teens and children to celebrate reading and to become lifelong library users who recognize the library as an important partner in community education. The Kids Summer Reading Program encourages children age 2 through fifth grade to continue reading through the summer school break. Research shows that children lose a portion of their reading skills if they stop reading during that time. The Kids Summer Reading Program is designed to help children retain what they worked so hard to learn during the school year. When they participate in the Kids Summer Reading Program, children are able to return to school in the fall with their reading skills intact. The award of the grant will continue a long partnership with Shell Martinez Refinery to support community-based programming in Martinez. The grant will also provide reading incentives in the form of a new paperback book for those children completing the program. By completing the program, children will take an important step in their reading development.
