HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04222014 - D.2RECOMMENDATION(S): CONSIDER request of individual Contra Costa County Supervisors to be signatories to a letter to the leadership of the State Legislature regarding potential water bond legislation. FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact. BACKGROUND: For many years, Contra Costa County has been involved on various water-related commissions (Delta Protection Commission, the Delta Conservancy) and coalitions (Delta Counties Coalition). For the past several years, Supervisors Mary Nejedly Piepho and Karen Mitchoff have continued this representation by Contra Costa County with partners who share our concerns over the Delta. One such partnership is between the Delta Counties Coalition and the San Joaquin Valley supervisors. Discussions have mainly revolved around projects that we all agree need to move forward in order to address the co-equal goals of the 2009 legislation: 1) protecting, restoring and enhancing the Delta ecosystem and 2) a more reliable water supply for all of California. There are several water bond bills in the Legislature currently navigating the legislative process to move these co-equal goals forward. Since there is no new water, we must figure out how to manage the water we have. The attached letter asks the leadership in the State Legislature to ensure that storage is a key component of any water bond bill. It is being circulated to those of us who have been working on water issues; however, both Supervisors Piepho and Mitchoff thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to share the letter with our colleagues on this Board and see if they would also like to sign the letter.
