APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Public Defender, or her designee, to apply for and accept a grant award from the
van Loben Sels/RembeRock Foundation in the amount of $50,000 in support of a community advocate position in
the juvenile unit for the period of April 1, 2014 through March 31, 2015.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Acceptance of this grant award will result in an amount payable to the County in the amount of $50,000 from the van
Loben Sels/RembeRock Foundation in support of a community advocate position in the juvenile unit. No County
match required.
BACKGROUND:
The Office of the Public Defender has been awarded grant funds to support a Juvenile Unit Community Advocate.
The goal of this position is to support a juvenile defense team approach to juvenile advocacy. The Community
Advocate will assist with reentry and success planning for juvenile clients at pre-adjudication, disposition, and
post-disposition. By working with juvenile clients prior to adjudication, the community advocate will gain important
knowledge about the youth and his or her family and community, which will then aid attorneys in developing
alternative

disposition plans for the court to consider. Support from a community advocate will increase the number of
alternative disposition plans submitted to the court, increase the use of diversion programs, and decrease the use of
out-of-home placements. The community advocate will also help provide necessary support post-disposition to help
juvenile clients complete probation successfully.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If the grant award is not accepted our juvenile clients will be denied an opportunity for enhanced success and
diversion out of the criminal justice system.
