The Contra Costa
Commission for Women’s
mission is to improve the
economic status, social
welfare and overall quality
of life of women in
Contra Costa County.
The activities for the Commission over the past year include:
1. NACW
The Commission was one of the main co-sponsors and hosts of the 2013 annual
conference for the National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW)
held this past July in San Jose. Many members of the Commission volunteered
and worked on organizing, coordinating, and attending this event, with attendees
like Elmy Bermejo, the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for the United
States Department of Labor, nationally-renowned academic and public affairs
radio host Doctor Martha Burk, the Executive Director of the ERA Education
Project, Kamala Lopez, and Gloria Feldt, former President of Planned Parenthood
Federation of America. With attendees from all over the country, the various
representatives of commission on the status of women shared best practices,
strategies for dealing with common problems, and ways to continue to remain
relevant in policy-making.
2.ACCW
Commissioner Gordon led a group which represented the Commission at the
Annual Retreat of the Association of California Commissions for Women
(ACCW) in Los Angeles, in January 2014. The Commissioners attended at their
own expense. A similar group led by Commissioner Gordon attended the 2013
Annual Retreat held in Sacramento.
3.2013 Women’s Policy Summit
Cosponsored the 2013 Women’s Policy Summit with the California Center for
Research on Women and Families, held from January 17
th-19th in Sacramento. We
also cosponsored the 2014 Women’s Policy Summit, held from January 16th-18th,
in Sacramento.
4. Social Media/Public Relations Update
The Commission continued working on updating and improving the website, and
has a dedicated subcommittee focused on maintaining, expanding, and improving
our social media presence through newsletters, Facebook, and the newspapers and
local news stations.
5. Why Women in Leadership? Panel Discussion
Planned and hosted the first in a series of networking and panel events discussing
women in the workplace, with this first panel focusing on the importance of
having women in corporate leadership roles. The panel members were:

Bank of the West
Loretta Walker – Vice President, External Affairs at ATT
Kathy Fifer – HR Manager at Dow Chemical
a
Diana Baughman – Manager, California Public Affairs at Chevron
Delores Turner – Manager of HR at East Bay MUD
The panel discussion was held on October 24
th, 2014, with a packed roomful of
attendees and guests.
6. Biennial Hall of Fame Planning
The Commission began active planning for our biennial Hall of Fame event, to be
held in March 2014, honoring outstanding women in Contra Costa County who
have made an impact in their communities in fields like Justice, Health Care,
Leadership, and the Arts.

Through the nonprofit body Friends of the Contra Costa Commission for Women,
a grant was provided to the County Veterans Service Officer for the purchasing of
journals to assist female veterans recover from military sexual trauma.
Attendance/Representation
As of February 6th, 2014, the Commission has ten out of a potential fifteen to
twenty-five member board, with 14 at-large vacancies and one district
representative vacancy. There is a quorum at each meeting. The Commission
expects to continue strong recruiting efforts next year, and to eventually add more
members to reach the maximum of twenty-five commission members.
The Contra Costa Commission for Women is committed to working with the
Board of Supervisors in 2014 for the betterment of women and girls in Contra
Costa County.
Training/Certification
We have not received any training or certification. We have been given a DVD for
the commissioners to view to meet the required training, and also a copy of the
County Advisory Board Handbook. In the past, when we had a budget from the
County, we attended Women’s conferences sponsored by other commissions and
the State. New Commissioners have been strongly encouraged to attend the
trainings offered by the County.
Goals 2014
v Cookie Project:
Raising awareness of the pay gap between men and women in schools
and the community through an interactive curriculum and program, with
support and materials from the National Association of Commissions for
Women.
v Continuing to draw attention to health disparities between women and men in
the county by:
a.Co-sponsoring and tabling at Women’s Forums and Health Fairs
throughout the County (i.e. California State Senator Mark DeSaulnier’s
Annual Women’s Health Forum).
b.Contacting Legislators and monitoring legislation.
v Continuing to monitor and support legislation that will improve the socio and
economic status of women.
v Strategic planning for the 2014/2015 year
v Bone Health Workshops
Holding workshops across the County to educate women and girls as to how to
take care of their bones at any age to avoid bone loss in the future.
Challenges 2014
No County support person -The Commission’s assigned support person, has
provided the Commission with no support at all, including forcing us to find our
own storage space for our awards, banners, etc. that belong to the Commission. In
addition, we are still having issues with meeting locations.
Communication from the BOS to the Commission -The Commission desires to
have open dialogue through our district representatives to each member of the
BOS to know when there are questions or issues. Furthermore, when a member of
the BOS makes an appointment or a change to the Commission, we would like to
be notified prior to it being implemented.
Note:Despite these challenges, the Women’s Commission continues to be a
functioning and productive body.
