HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 03112014 - C.23RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Interim County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $5,000 from the East Bay Community Foundation, administered by the Rodeo Municipal Advisory Council, for Rodeo Library services pursuant to the local refinery Good Neighbor Agreement, for the period July 1 through December 31, 2014. FISCAL IMPACT: The total cost for four extra open hours per week at the Rodeo Library for the period of July 1 through December 31, 2014 is estimated not to exceed $5,288. Funds from this grant will support up to $5,000 of costs. The remaining cost of $288 is included in the Library's FY 2014-15 budget. BACKGROUND: The County currently funds 18 hours of library service per week at the Rodeo Library. If granted, the $5,000 received from Rodeo Municipal Advisory Council will be used by the Library to fund four additional hours of library service per week from July 1 through December 31, 2014, which will provide one extra hour of service on Saturdays and evening hours on two weekdays for a total of four additional open hours per week. These extended hours offer Rodeo residents more opportunities to make use of the educational and recreational resources available in the library. The Rodeo Municipal Advisory Council is a strong supporter of the Rodeo Library and consistently grants funds to the library for extended open hours. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: Extending hours at the Rodeo Library will meet all five community outcomes established in the Children's Report Card. Research shows that early and positive experiences with books set the stage for a child's success in learning to read. Additionally, literacy skills are a strong predictor of health and employment status. Extending hours at the Rodeo Library will draw more families to the library and encourage regular exposure to reading and books, thus improving quality of life for children and families in Rodeo.
