Subject:UPDATE ON THE STATUS OF THE MORAGA ORINDA FIRE DISTRICT
CLERK'S ADDENDUM
Chief Stephen Healy provided the Board of Directors with the following highlights:
In November of 2013, the staffing model in rank & file was reduced from 19 to 17; A third ambulance unit
is in place in Orinda, all three are cross-staffed; There remains an ambulance unit in Moraga; Data
collection over several months indicates virtually no impact on response times; A steady increase has been
observed in requests for services for plan checks and new construction permitting; Received a grant to hold
an event on April 30th at St. Mary's College related to urban/wildland interface issues; The annual open
house will be held on May 17th, Wildfire Preparedness Day; Received a grant from the Diablo Fire Safe
Council for a vegetation mitigation project on Muir Trust property off Miner Road; Including tonight's
graduates, there will be 500 CERT volunteers in the LaMorinda area; The community known as Sleepy
Hollow has achieved the designation "Fire Wise', the first and only in Contra Costa County; Received a
grant for Community Awareness Emergency Response for the 2014 Lamorinda Great Shakeout, and had
excellent participation; Finalized a Memorandum of Understanding with the Town of Moraga to provide
them with backup EOC support; Completed a mutual response agreement with the City of Berkeley for fire
prevention services in the Tilden Park area; The mine-tunnel rescue team for the Caldecott Fourth Bore
project (completed) has been disbanded and some remaining funds from the project will be directed to safety
signage at the exit in the eastbound side.
Chief Healy acknowledged the same challenges to service delivery and operational costs as all other fire service
agencies are experiencing, but assured the Directors the district is solvent at this time. The Board of Directors
ACCEPTED the report.
