SUBJECT: "Hands Across Contra Costa"
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize Supervisor Sunne McPeak to explore with interested
groups and individuals the feasibility of organizing a "Hands
Across Contra Costa Day" to coincide with the USA for Africa
"Hands Across America" event being scheduled for Memorial Day
weekend, 1986. This assignment will also require coordination
with the appropriate organizers and authorities responsible for
the national event.
Further, request a feasibility report by Supervisor McPeak back
to the Board of Supervisors by March, 1986.
BACKGROUND
As Chair of the California Public-Private Partnership
Commission, Supervisor McPeak has met with the USA for Africa
organizers to discuss their activities regarding national
hunger as well as international hunger. The "Hands Across
America" project scheduled for Memorial Day weekend 1986 will
raise money for domestic hunger and will involve a human
chain--people standing holding hands across the United States
--from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Seaboard. Volunteers
wishing to participate in the human chain will contribute a fee
(or seek financial sponsors as donors) for the privilege of
being a part of this unique experience. The funds raised will
be distributed to domestic hunger programs.
It would be exciting to compliment the national effort with a
"Hands Across Contra Costa" project to raise money for local
hunger and homeless programs. It could involve a broad variety
of organizations--churches, community groups, service clubs,
schools, unions, chambers of commerce, youth organizations--and
would be a strong symbol of community and unity with people
standing hand to hand from Richmond to the Delta. Although it
will involve much coordination, cooperation, and organization,
it has tremendous potential to highlight and address the needs
of the hungry and homeless in Contra Costa County.
