APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Director, or designee, to apply for and accept
funding from two (2 ) National Head Start Association mini-grants, in an amount up to $100 each for a total of $200
for Cooking Matters at the Store program(s), for the period November 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013.
FISCAL IMPACT:
County to received a total of $200 ($100 each) from 2 mini-grants from the National Head Start Association.
Traditionally the National Head Start Association requests a Board Order from the awardee accepting funds.
BACKGROUND:
The National Head Start Association partnered with Share Our Strength to connect young children to healthy food by
offering Cooking Matters at the Store mini-grants to reach Head Start families. Cooking Matters at the Store is an
interactive grocery store tour that teaches families to shop for healthy, affordable food

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
as part of the No Kids Hungry campaign, working to connect kids at risk of hunger in America with the healthy food
they need every day.
Mini-grants of $100 each will assist Head Start programs facilitate interactive tours for up to 25 people. EHSD
Community Services Bureau has requested 2 mini-grants, $100 each for a total of $200.
Goals include encouraging families to compare unit prices to find the best deals, read ingredient lists to identify whole
grains, and compare food labels to make health choices.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Without funding, the National Head Start Association Cooking Matters at the Store program(s) will not be developed
and implemented by EHSD Community Services Bureau.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The grant will support two of the community outcomes established in the Children's Report Card: 2) "Children and
Youth Healthy and Preparing for Productive Adulthood" and 4) "Families that are Safe, Stable and Nurturing" by
providing nutritional information and encouragement to families for healthy lifestyles.
