FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact. Report only. BACKGROUND: The following goals were established when initiating the squad company concept:Enhance the response capabilities and resources of the District in light of severe reductions in operational units. Provide emergency medical care for lower severity basic life support (BLS) incidents. Serve as a first responder for serious advanced life support (ALS) incidents when an engine or truck company is not available. Keep suppression units available for fire and rescue emergencies. The extra resources will assist in reducing some of the work load on existing companies during peak service demand periods. Evaluate the efficacy of alternative service delivery models and smaller vehicle platforms. During the first month of operation, Squad-1 responded to: 31- BLS medical emergencies 94 - ALS medical emergencies 13 - Fire incidents 20 - Other types of incidents Total responses - 158 Only one unit has been placed in service to date due to the availability of appropriate vehicles in the fleet.
