D R A F T December 1971 Contra Costa County Revised and Retitled: December 1985 LEAD VECTOR CONTROL TECHNICIAN DEFINITION: Under general supervision, to perform control or eradication of animals and insects which are potential carriers or transmitters of disease; to provide lead direction to others in the program; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: THIS SINGLE POSITION CLASS PROVIDES LEAD DIRECTION TO VECTOR CONTROL TECHNICIANS IN THE PERFORMANCE OF FIELD ACTIVITIES IN THE HEALTH`SERVICES DEPARTMENT'S VECTOR CONTROL PROGRAM. GENERAL SUPERVISION IS RECEIVED FROM A SUPERVISING ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH INSPECTOR BUT THE INCUMBENT FUNCTIONS. WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF INDEPENDENCE ACCORDING TO ESTABLISHED ,POLICY AND PRIORITIES. TYPICAL TASKS: Coordinates THE. SKUNK TRAPPING PROGRAM, and performs baiting of county creeks, drainage channels, flood control right-of-ways and public sanitary sewers; performs inspections of garbage and refuse, dumps, parks and residential and commercial property for signs of insect and rodent activity; determines method and rate of application of poison baits, sprays; dusts and gases; main- tains visual inventory of various chemicals and supplies and assists in annual inventory; requests supervisor to replenish supplies; mixes poisons and sprays used-'in control or eradication programs; maintains poisons, storage areas''and, tools; PROVIDES LEAD DIRECTION TO SUBORDINATE STAFF; prepares simple reports . . and records. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: License Required: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.' CERTIFICATE RE UIRED: POSSESSION OFA VALID CERTIFICATE AS A VECTOR CONTROL TEZ-HNfMN—ISSNEED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES. Education: POSSESSION OF A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, G.E.D. EQUIVALENCY ORA HIGH SCHOOL,-PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE. Experience: EITHER (1 ) One year of FULLTIME` experience OR ITS EQUIVALENT in,vector control work in a federal , state or local govOMment agency, or (2) two years of fulltime experience OR ITS-- EQUIVALENT in pest control work. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the accepted methods and techniques in the control or eradication of vectors; knowledge of the safe methods of handling various poisons and insecticides; knowledge of breeding,places and habits of vectors; knowledge of rodenticides and insecticides and their proper uses; ability to . calculate proper mixtures of poisons and insecticides; ability to mix and place i poisons effectively; ABILITY AND WILLINGNESS TO PERFORM MANUAL LABOR; ability to identify various types of vectors; ability to plan and coordinate routine work of subordinates; ability to deal effectively with CO-WORKERS and the public; ability to maintain records and make written and oral reports.
