HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10012013 - SD.7RECOMMENDATION(S):
ACCEPT an oral report from the County Administrator on the Affordable Care Act notice requirements to County
employees.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No fiscal impact. Oral report only.
BACKGROUND:
Beginning on October 1st, the Affordable Care Act requires employers to send out notices to all their employees
informing them about the existence of public Health Care Insurance Marketplaces, like Covered CA, and telling
them how the Marketplaces will work. This notice must inform employees of the insurance coverage options offered
by the Marketplaces and whether or not employees are eligible for employer-sponsored health benefits. We must
send this notice to all current employees by October 1, 2013 and must give notice to all new employees when they
are hired. This date coincides with the initial opening of the public Marketplaces.
The federal government has provided employers with sample notices and forms that can be used for this purpose. We
have used their samples as templates to customize the notices for our employees. County HR will begin distributing
the notices and supplemental materials
