HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 08132013 - C.04RECOMMENDATION(S): ADOPT Resolution No. 2013/339 of Local Support to submit an application for Regional Safe Routes to School (SR2S) funds for the West Contra Costa Safe Routes to School Expansion Project. (Districts I & V) FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact. If applications are selected for funding, the County may be granted $709,000 for education programs in West Contra Costa County to encourage and educate students to walk and bike to school. Receiving grant funds will augment County funds to allow additional educational events and activities to be conducted at schools throughout West County. BACKGROUND: The purpose of the Regional SR2S program is to fund educational activities for school children that will help reduce bicycle and pedestrian accidents as well as to encourage walking and biking to school as a healthy alternative that can help reduce childhood obesity. BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) Project Description The West Contra Costa County Safe Routes to School Expansion Project will conduct 12 walkability audits/walkability workshops, 12 focus groups, 60 meetings with teacher and parent groups, 12 assemblies, 100 outreach contacts, 48 on-site technical assistance with local bicycle/pedestrian champions, and at least 48 classroom pedestrian educational presentations. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: A negative action will eliminate a potential funding opportunity and delay implementation of program activities. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: Educational programs will help increase students' awareness of road safety, laws and guidelines to reduce occurrences of collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists.
