HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06252013 - C.55RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee, to accept, on behalf of the County, Grant Award #28-714-6 from Los Medanos Community Healthcare District, to pay the County in an the amount not to exceed $5,000, for the Let’s Move Pittsburg! Project, for the period from January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013. FISCAL IMPACT: Acceptance of this Grant Award will result in an amount of $5,000 from Los Medanos Community Healthcare District for the project Let’s Move Pittsburg! Contra Costa Health Services, Community Wellness and Intervention Program. No County match required. BACKGROUND: Contra Costa Health Services’ (CCHS), Community Wellness and Intervention Program Let’s Move Pittsburg! project: “LMP”, will provide opportunities for nutrition education and engaging in fun physical activity to parents at one elementary school in Pittsburg in order to reduce the incidence of overweight obesity among low-income adults and their families. The Los Medanos Health Care District provides support to obesity prevention efforts. Project BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) all of these efforts, there is a need for more nutrition education and ongoing physical activity opportunities for adults. This is evidenced by long waiting lists for programs such as Cooking Matters and New Kids and an absence of affordable facilities and programs where residents can work out. The LMP Project goals are to reduce the rate of obesity and associated chronic diseases among families in Pittsburg by providing nutrition education, opportunities to exercise and capacity building among Pittsburg community residents through December 31, 2013. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: If this award is not approved, the County will not receive funds to educate the public, particularly low income consumers, on healthful nutrition and physical activity practices to help reduce risk for chronic disease.
