HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06042013 - C.51RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $10,000 from Contra Costa County Keller Canyon Mitigation Trust Fund to purchase books for “Every Child One Book” Bay Point community children’s read, for the period of July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014. FISCAL IMPACT: No library fund match. BACKGROUND: Contra Costa County Keller Canyon Mitigation Trust Funds have been granted in prior years, and have positively impacted the community with library programs and materials that support reading and lifelong learning. In 2013-14 Keller Canyon Mitigation Trust Funds will be used to purchase multiple copies of a popular children’s book for distribution in the Bay Point community. The Bay Point Community Read, entitled, “Every Child One Book,” will foster a culture of readers and encourage early literacy. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: The Library will not purchase the proposed materials. Mitigation Trust Fund to purchase books for community read CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: Children Ready for and Succeeding in School: “One Child One Book,” a Bay Point Community Read, will make possible the distribution of one title to children and families living in Bay Point. The book will be accompanied with early literacy and storytime tips, along with an invitation to attend library programs that promote reading. Anticipated outcomes include: 1) 40% of children will associate the library with reading and an after-school community space; 2) 75% of parents who attend library storytime will learn tips that encourage their children to read. 3) 75% of parents at storytime will learn the value of reading to, and encouraging their children to read; 4) 75% of book distribution partners will report a greater sense of civic engagement; 5) 40% of children will participate in their first ever community read.
