HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06042013 - C.50RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Veterans Service Officer to apply for and accept grant funding from the Friends of the Contra Costa Commission For Women an amount not to exceed $1,509 for journals to be provided to female veterans that have experience military sexual trauma, as recommended by the County Administrator. FISCAL IMPACT: No County match. This grant will provide $1,508.15 for the purchase of journals. BACKGROUND: Contra Costa County Veterans Service provides Veterans, spouses and dependents assistance with obtaining benefits from U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, California Department of Veterans Affairs and other various agencies. This grant will assist in providing improved outreach to female Veterans who might have been subject to Military Sexual Trauma (MST). Women Veterans represent approximately 10% of our Veteran population or approximately 6,500 in Contra Costa County. Through continual outreach this number will grow. MST requires the need for historical documentation regarding the abuse or actions taken by the Veteran. Providing Veterans with journals enables them to organize their thoughts and document their abuse. Providing these journals to female Veterans also enhances the relationship between the County Veterans Service Officer and female Veterans. Reaching out to Veterans that have suffered MST may reduce homelessness, reduce rates of suicide, increase reintegration by providing Veterans with resources for seeking treatment and potentially provide them with compensation. These funds will be used to purchase 200 journals at approximately $5.60 each. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: The Veterans Services Department will lose the opportunity to provide these services to female veterans. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: Not applicable.
