HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05072013 - C.35RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Probation Officer, or designee, to apply for and accept funding under the Smart Probation: Reducing Prison Populations, Saving Money, and Creating Safer Communities grant from the U. S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in an amount not to exceed $750,000 to implement evidence-based practices that target high-risk probationers by identifying medium/high-risk offenders, improving pre-release contact, and increasing capacity for cognitive behavior treatment. FISCAL IMPACT: $750,000 for a three year period; No County match requirement. BACKGROUND: The goal of this application is to receive funds to increase effective evidenced-based probation programs that address offender's needs and reduce recidivism. Funds received will increase capacity within the Probation Department to implement evidence-based practices that target high-risk probationers by developing and promoting the integration of probation supervision strategies and tools to facilitate effective reentry, expand options for access to healthcare upon re-entry, and evaluate the results of new strategies and tools tested through this initiative. Additionally, data gathered will be used to evaluate and validate delivery of probation services and improve customer service.
