HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04092013 - C.66RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $4,500 from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association to provide materials, training, and funding for the “Let’s Talk About It” reading and discussion series for the period of September 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014. FISCAL IMPACT: No library fund match. BACKGROUND: The American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities promote cultural and community programming as an essential part of library service in all types and sizes of libraries. The “Let’s Talk About It” grant will allow the Pleasant Hill Library to maximize the Bridging Cultures Muslim Bookshelf materials already received by the county library system, engaging a diverse array of adults throughout Contra Costa County in reading Muslim Bookshelf texts and providing a platform for discussing the works collectively as they relate to current social and cultural issues. BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) Pleasant Hill Library will use the “Let’s Talk About It” grant to partner with a local PhD scholar, as well as the city of Pleasant Hill’s newly remodeled Senior Center, to lead the community in five discussion sessions aimed at promoting an understanding of and mutual respect for people with diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives within the U.S. and abroad. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: The library will not implement the “Let’s Talk About It” Muslim Bookshelf reading and discussion series.
