Appoint Joey D. Smith to the District 1 Seat on the Contra Costa Commission for Women to a three year term
expiring on February 28, 2016.

BACKGROUND:
The function of the Contra Costa Commission for Women is to identify major economic, educational and social
concerns of women in Contra Costa County, to reach and inform all women on a variety of issues.

Supervisor Gioia recruits broadly for his commission seat openings, utilizing his website, eblasts, newsletter, and
traditional media outlets such as newspapers.

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
Joey Smith is actively involved in community advocacy and education to help women prepare for and secure jobs
in the construction trades and other "nontraditional" employment offering good living wages. She is involved with
Rebuild America, a U.S. Department of Energy community-based energy efficiency program (in her job as a
Supervisory janitor for East Bay MUD); and the Black Women Organized for Political Action, Richmond/Contra
Costa Chapter. She also has experience working on workplace violence prevention.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Appointment will not be made.
