The 180-day waiting period does not apply to retirees who are firefighters or public safety officers returning to work. The Board has some discretion to waive the 180 day waiting period. This sit-out period will not apply if: 1. The Board of Supervisors certifies the nature of the employment, and 2. The appointment is necessary to fill a critically needed position before 180 days have passed, and 3. The appointment has been approved by the Board of Supervisors in a public meeting. The appointment may not be placed on a consent calendar. Therefore, the Board Order seeking approval must be on the Short Discussion portion of the Board’s agenda. The Health Services Department has submitted a request for an exemption to the 180 sit-out rule for Neal Price, Hazardous Materials Specialist II. Mr. Price retired on February 22, 2013.
