HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 12112012 - C.42RECOMMENDATION(S):
ADOPT Position Adjustment Resolution No. 21211 to reallocate on the salary schedule the classification of
Agricultural Commissioner - Director of Weights and Measures-Exempt (BAA1) from BD5 1972 ($7,322.06 -
$8,900.01) to BD5 2210 ($9267.78 - $11,265.05) in the Department of Agriculture.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Upon approval, the annual cost will be approximately $48,891 including $13,252 in pension costs. The increase will
be covered by salary savings from position vacancies.
BACKGROUND:
Recruitment and retention for the Assistant Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures and the
Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights has been difficult due to low salaries. A recent salary survey revealed
that the salaries were significantly below the median in comparison to other County Agricultural Department
classifications within the Bay Area.
On March 27, 2012 the Board of Supervisors approved a salary reallocation for the Assistant Agricultural
Commissioner/Sealer of Weights

Subject:Reallocation of salary for Agricultural Commissioner-Director of Weights and Measures-Exempt
BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
increasing the number of qualified applicants who applied for that position.
The Human Resources Department recently began the recruitment process for a new Agricultural
Commissioner/Sealer of Weights. According to the State of California Department of Food and Agriculture
license records there are very few candidates statewide that have necessary licenses to apply for this position
making the applicant pool very small. At this time Human Resources recommends reallocating the salary for the
Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights in order to improve the chances of hiring an excellent candidate.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Failure to act on this item will result in increased difficulty in filling this position.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
No impact.
