SUBJECT: Proclamation of October 16, 1986 "World Food Day" l
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Proclaim October 16, 1986 "World Food Day". Encourage local residents to become
involved with the Hunger Task Force in developing long-term solutions to hunger in
Contra Costa County.
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND:
Each October 16, World Food Day provides an opportunity for Americans to discuss
the root causes of hunger and to consider long-term solutions. In Contra Costa
County a new coalition, the Hunger Task Force, has been formed to address these
issues locally. The Hunger Task Force is made up of representatives of the Food
Coalition, the Department of Health Services Prevention Program, WIC, Head Start,
Social Services Department, and other County and community groups. The Task Force
seeks to publicize the existence of hunger in our County, and to encourage resi-
dents to become involved. Other aims of the Hunger Task Force are to:
e Document the nature, extent, and consequences of hunger in areas and population
groups throughout Contra Costa County;
® Coordinate community education and outreach activities among agencies;
e Support client self-help and peer support efforts;
a. Use the media to publicize the existence, causes, and potential solutions to
hunger in Contra Costa County; and
a Advocate public policy which increases food access, improves nutrition, and
addresses the root causes of hunger among the County' s low-income and high-risk
populations.
The Board of Supervisors' proclamation will assist the Hunger Task Force and the
Prevention Program in public education efforts. The "Hands Across Contra Costa"
event endorsed by the Board symbolized this County's commitment to the issues of
hunger and homelessness. The objectives of the Hunger Task Force and World Food
Day continue the community education work in the same spirit as "Hands Across
Contra Costa".
