HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 11132012 - C.32RECOMMENDATION(S): APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $1,000 from the Pleasant Hill Community Foundation to purchase children’s books for the period December 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. FISCAL IMPACT: No library fund match. BACKGROUND: The mission of the Pleasant Hill Community Foundation is to strengthen community organizations. Every fall since 2001, the Foundation gives grants to youth-serving organizations from the proceeds of the Pleasant Hill Sunvalley Golf Classic. The Pleasant Hill Library received a youth grant from the Foundation in fall 2011. Books for beginning readers are in high demand among Pleasant Hill families, and the Library and its collections are instrumental in helping children learn the basics of reading. Pleasant Hill community members checked out books for beginning readers 19,000 times during the 2011-12 fiscal year, a 33% increase over the previous year. Funds from the Pleasant Hill Community Foundation will enable the Pleasant Hill Library to purchase approximately 100 additional beginning reader books. These books will be freely available for all community members to borrow. Books purchased with grant funds are expected to be checked out and taken home 7,500 times over the life of the books. This collection will help Pleasant Hill children develop beginning reading skills such as word identification and completion of sentences and will foster an enjoyment of books and reading. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: The Library will not implement the proposal. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT: This project will help Pleasant Hill children develop beginning reading skills such as word identification and completion of sentences and will foster an enjoyment of books and reading, thereby supporting an outcome established in the Children’s Report card: Children Ready for and Succeeding in School.
