The APWA Accreditation/Re- Accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the requirements of the management practices established nationally in the public works industry. On a daily basis, accredited agencies meet or exceed standards of performance in areas such as road and bridge repair, maintenance, engineering and construction services, building and grounds maintenance, utility coordination and vehicle maintenance. Contra Costa County’s Re-Accreditation indicates that they are maintaining their documentation and practices and meeting any new practices adopted by the APWA. “Contra Costa’s APWA Re-Accreditation is a program that has enhanced the effectiveness and competencies of our Public Works Department, and that has been accomplished over a lengthy period of time with three APWA Re-Accreditations since our initial Accreditation in July, 2001,” said Public Works Director Julia Bueren. “With the APWA Re- Accreditation, the Public Works Department has updated and recommitted to concepts of continuous improvement and in-depth self-assessment of our agency’s policies, procedures and practices” Bueren said. The Public Works department is responsible for road and flood control facilities, parks and two airports in the County’s unincorporated areas. The department also provides real estate services to other agencies and buildings, grounds, and fleet services to other County departments. “Public Works staff provide a high level of dedication and service to our mission, and they are the heroes of this prestigious award of APWA Re-Accreditation,” Bueren said. For Contra Costa’s Re-Accreditation award, a team of public works professionals from Washington, Oregon, and Missouri completed a thorough evaluation of operations during their September, 2012 site visit. “It’s great to see that the Contra Costa County Department of Public Works has again completed the reassessment and the detailed review of their agency’s policies and procedures to qualify for Re-Accreditation,” said APWA Credentialing Director Ann Daniels. “To do so for the third consecutive time shows incredible dedication to the public works operational objectives and goals,” said Daniels.
