Subject:Appoint Nicholas Alexander to the District 1 Public Sector Seat on the Economic Opportunity Council
BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
It is made up of 15 members - five from the low-income community, five from private sector community
organizations and business people, and the five members of the Board of Supervisors who can either serve on the
Council or choose to appoint designees on their behalf.
The members of the EOC review, study and hear presentations from members of the community to assist them in
studying the root causes of poverty in the county. They use this information to develop funding strategies to
address these root causes. One of their primary strategies is to seek out partnerships with other community
organizations that are also pursuing long-range strategies for low-income people.
Supervisor Gioia advertises for his open advisory board seats in a number of ways including through his website,
eblasts, newsletters, and the traditional media. He interviews all eligible candidates.
Mr. Alexander is a Facility Manager at RichmondBUILD, a construction skills job training program funded by
the Workforce Development Board. He has also worked as a researcher for the SEIU and as an analyst for the
AFL-CIO. He was a BA degree from Duke University in Public Policy and Economics.
