Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee, to accept on behalf of the County, Grant Award
#28-836 from Kaiser Permanente (Heal Grant), in an the amount of $30,000, for the East County HEAL Project in
Bay Point, Pittsburg and Antioch, for the period from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Acceptance of this Grant Award will result in an amount of $30,000 from Kaiser Permanente for the East County
Heal Project in Bay Point, Pittsburg and Antioch. No County match required.
BACKGROUND:
The East County HEAL Project funding from Kaiser will concentrate its planning for a HEAL East Project in Bay
Point, Pittsburg and Antioch. These two cities and unincorporated areas of Bay Point have very diverse populations
with a significant number of African American and Latino residents who have poorer health outcomes than their
counterparts. These areas are also

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
deprived of many of the resources such as community-based organizations, organized obesity prevention coalitions,
and prevention programs that exist in other parts of the County. Health is no only impacted by the genetics and
behavior of an individual; it is also impacted by social, environmental and economic factors. The goal of the project is
to increase knowledge, change attitudes and behavior of Bay Point, Pittsburg and Antioch residents with regard to
healthy nutrition and physical fitness for families by implementing the HEAL initiative.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If this grant is not approved, the County will not receive funding to support and fundraising activities for the ealthy
nutrition and physical fitness for families by implementing the HEAL initiative.
