APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Department Interim Director, on behalf of the
Workforce Development Board, to apply for and accept US Department of Commerce, Economic Development
Administration funding for the Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Acceleration Challenge Grant in an
amount not to exceed $800,000 for the period November 1, 2012 through October 31, 2015.
FISCAL IMPACT:
County to receive up to $800,000 over a 3-year period, 100% Federal. 50% of the total awarded grant funding (up to
$400,000 in matching funds and/or in-kind) non-federal match.
BACKGROUND:
The acceleration of innovation to support advanced manufacturing requires bridging the gaps in the present US
innovation system, particularly the gap between research and development activities and the deployment of
technological innovations into domestic production. The Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Acceleration
Challenge grant will foster collaboration and forge partnerships among diverse stakeholders including industry,
labor, academia, and government.
The goals of the project are:

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
Strengthen and expand existing cluster-based partnerships to foster advanced manufacturing-related growth and
accelerate high-quality job creation;
Develop a skilled/diverse advanced manufacturing workforce through training and employment activities;
Accelerate investment in and deployment of advanced manufacturing technologies through public-private
partnerships;
Expand advanced manufacturing capabilities, networks, supply chains, and assets that contribute to regional and
national manufacturing competitiveness and growth potential;
Leverage and expand collaboratives research and development between universities, Federal labs, and industry to
support manufacturing technology needs;
Accelerate commercialization of technologies for advanced manufacturing needs;
Support testing of new products and processes;
Spur new entrepreneurial companies that harness advanced manufacturing; and,
Increase exports, repatriate jobs, and attract increased domestic and foreign direct investment.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Without grant funding, programs to support the Advanced Manufacturing Jobs and Innovation Acceleration
Challenge grant will not be developed and implemented.
