Subject:P300 #21118 Reallocate the classification of the Undersheriff (6XB4) and Assistant Sheriff (6XB2) on the Salary
Schedule
BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
an Assistant Sheriff-Exempt position. The “flattening” of the organization was accomplished in February 2012
and resulted in increased duties and responsibilities for the Undersheriff and the Assistant Sheriffs.
The Human Resource Department has conducted a salary study from surrounding jurisdictions in the Bay Area
and has determined that the Undersheriff – Exempt and the Assistant Sheriff- Exempt salaries and benefits should
be reallocated and brought in alignment with the Bay Area median. There will be an 8.44% salary increase for the
Assistant Sheriff – Exempt position and an increase of 8.54% for the Undersheriff – Exempt position to
compensate for the increased duties and responsibilities and to alleviate the resulting salary compaction between
the Captain, Assistant Sheriff, and the Undersheriff positions.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The department will be forced to abandon organizational efforts and return to an old organizational structure that
will increase cost associated with filling vacancies.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
No impact.
