Subject:2011-14 Calif. Dept. of Educ. Facility Improvement Grant, Amendment #1
BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
to submit a grant application to California Department of Education Child Development Division to fund health and
safety improvements at Community Services Bureau childcare sites. The Bureau has identified a number of
playgrounds in need of wood chip replacement, ideally with an easier to clean product, new sandbox covers,
installation of new surfacing and play structures and additional shade structures. The number and nature of projects
to be completed will depend on funding analysis. The grant application and submission was approved by the Board
on May 10, 2011. This amendment updates the plans with more current cost projections and the inclusion of a new
project to install bullet-proof windows at Las Deltas childcare center in Richmond.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If not approved, grant application will not be submitted which may result in a delay to completing childcare facility
improvements.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
The Employment & Human Services Department Community Services Bureau supports three of Contra Costa
County’s community outcomes - Outcome 1: “Children Ready for and Succeeding in School,” Outcome 3: “Families
that are Economically Self-sufficient,” and, Outcome 4: “Families that are Safe, Stable, and Nurturing.” These
outcomes are achieved by offering comprehensive services, including high quality early childhood education,
nutrition, and health services to low-income children throughout Contra Costa County.
