APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a grant in the amount of $18,000
from Target Corporation for Early Childhood Reading programs for the period June 1, 2012 through December 31,
2013.
FISCAL IMPACT:
County to receive up to $18,000, 100% Target Corporation Early Childhood Reading grant funds. No library fund
match.
BACKGROUND:
Target Corporation awards annual grants to schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations to support early childhood
reading.
Children prepare to read long before they enter school, and young children need a variety of skills to become readers
and achieve success in school. By providing books, equipment and a welcoming, baby and toddler-friendly
environment with a variety of educational experiences, the library can assist parents in helping their children develop
early literacy skills. With funds from the Target Early Childhood Reading program, the Library will purchase
materials to enhance storytimes,

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The Library will not be able to provide early literacy programs if funds are not awarded.
CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATEMENT:
Funds received will promote literacy, language development, and reading readiness among children ages birth to five,
thereby supporting the following outcome established in the Children’s Report Card: Children Ready for and
Succeeding in School.
