Louder, Chief, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Date:April 24, 2012 Contra Costa County Subject:Support for East Contra Costa Fire Protection District's Levy of a Special Tax to Finance Fire Protection and Emergency Services BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) of Directors, levies a proposed tax of $197 per parcel per year that commences with fiscal year 2012-13 and sunsets on June 30, 2023. Since its creation, ECCFPD has been underfunded and understaffed and the recent dramatic reduction in property values has deepened the shortfall. ECCFPD has had to close two stations, make other significant staff reductions, and is currently using fund balance reserves to maintain this reduced level of service. Additional revenues are needed or even more serious and dangerous cuts will be made. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: The District will not be on record as taking a position on the proposed parcel tax for the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.
