Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee, to submit, on behalf of
County, Grant Application #28-824-2 with the State Office of Statewide Health Planning
and Development (OSHPD), to pay County an amount not to exceed $27,000, for the Health
Career Training Program to provide support for educationally and economically
disadvantaged students in Contra Costa County, for the period from June 18, 2012 through
July 18, 2013.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Submission of this Grant Application will allow the County to apply for funds in the
amount of $27,000 from the State Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development for
the Health Career Training Program in Contra Costa County, through July 18, 2013. No
County funds are required.
BACKGROUND:
In 2008, Contra Costa Mental Health (CCMH) conducted a workforce needs assessment,
and through the stakeholder process that involved school personnel and other educators, this
group expressed interest in the development of mental health course work in existing high

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
health academies across the County. Based on the assessment or various integrations of
health in high schools in the County, CCMH did not find a high school academy in any
region, that has a core mental health component, program, or curriculum. The goal of this
program is to create mental health career options for economically, educationally,
disadvantaged, and/or under represented students as they pursue a career in health
professions and also to, potentially, increase the mental health workforce.
Approval of Grant Application #28-824-2 will allow funding to support the Health Career
Training Program in Contra Costa County, for the period from June 18, 2012 through July
18, 2013.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
It this Board Order is not approved, the Health Services Department would not be able to
apply to the State for these grant funds.
