HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04172012 - C.36RECOMMENDATION(S):
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a
grant from the Shell Martinez Refinery in an amount not to exceed $500 to support the
Martinez Library Kids Summer Reading Program for the period June 9 through August 18,
2012.
FISCAL IMPACT:
$500.00; 100% revenue, no Library Fund match. Budgeted.
BACKGROUND:
The Kids Summer Reading Program helps children retain reading skills by providing
reading incentives to those who complete the reading program. Research has demonstrated
that children lose a portion of their reading skills if they stop reading during school breaks.
When they participate in the summer reading program, children are able to return to school
in the fall with their skills intact, ready to read their way to success. The summer reading
program gives children the tools they will need to become lifelong learners, able to adapt to
a quickly changing world in which success in school requires the ability to learn and grow
