HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 03272012 - C.09RECOMMENDATION(S): AUTHORIZE the Public Works Department, on behalf of Contra Costa County, to submit an application requesting Safe Routes to School Program funds for the Walnut Boulevard Pedestrian and Bike Safety Project and APPROVE the Chair of the Board to sign a letter of support on behalf of the Board of Supervisors. (District IV) FISCAL IMPACT: If the application is approved, the County may be granted up to $450,000 toward the $1,200,000 project budget. There is a 10% local match requirement which will be a maximum of $45,000 funded entirely by Area of Benefit fees. BACKGROUND: This project will construct a pedestrian path for approximately 2,400 feet on the easterly side of Walnut Boulevard from Walnut Heights Elementary School to Clarkin Court, and a class III bike route from Walnut Heights Elementary School to Mountain View Boulevard. Bueren, Public Works Director/Chief Engineer Date:March 27, 2012 Contra Costa County Subject:Safe Routes to School Program funds for the Walnut Boulevard Pedestrian and Bike Safety Project BACKGROUND: (CONT'D) east side of Walnut Boulevard for approximately 1.8 miles. Currently there are no pedestrian or bicycle facilities on Walnut Boulevard in unincorporated area south of Walnut Heights Elementary School. Students and residents that walk along Walnut Boulevard must walk within the traveled way used by vehicles or on an uneven dirt shoulder. There currently is no access for mobility impaired community members. This project will provide a continuous path for students and all community members to walk to school safely in an area separated for pedestrians. The project will also provide a Class III bike route for the community. Safe Routes to School Program funding is a State program and requires a 10% match. CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION: Delay in authorization will eliminate the opportunity to receive Safe Route to School funding for this project.
