APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Librarian, or designee, to apply for and accept a
California Reads grant from the California Council for the Humanities in the amount of
$1,500 for materials and programming at the Martinez Library for the period January 1,
2012 through November 30, 2012.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No library fund match.
BACKGROUND:
California Reads is a state-wide initiative of the California Council for the Humanities and
the California Center for the Book. The library’s participation in the California Reads
program will unite the community through various events, discussion and partnerships
centered on the book "Farewell to Manzanar" by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D.
Houston. The grant program will provide an opportunity for the library to bring in members
of the community who are not the usual library stakeholders and make them library
supporters for life. The California Reads program provides an opportunity to showcase the
library as a facility and as a resource for the entire community.
