APPROVE Appropriations and Revenue Adjustment No. 5007 authorizing new revenue in
the amount of $10,000 from accepted donations and appropriating it for the purchase of two
canines for the Patrol Division.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This action increases revenue and appropriations by $10,000. There is no change in net
County cost.
BACKGROUND:
The Office of the Sheriff established a Canine Program to provide assistance to Sheriff's
Office personnel and allied agencies within the scope of law enforcement activities. The
mission of the Canine Program is to provide assistance to all Sheriff's Office Divisions
whenever possible and within Department policy, as well as enhance the overall
effectiveness of the Department, along with supporting other law enforcement agencies as
needed.
The Canine Program improves Sheriff's Office effectiveness and enhances public safety

narcotics detection, protection, crowd control, and apprehension techniques. The Canine
Program also performs public canine demonstrations for schools and charity
organizations, for the purpose of building Department-public relationships. Community
support is vital for ensuring the success of the Canine Program.
There will be no recurring cost increases associated with this request. One canine is
replacing a retired canine, and one canine is being assigned the Contract City of Oakley.
The City of Oakley is providing for the costs associated with training, boarding, and care
of the canine assigned to its force.
