HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 12021986 - X.14 IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF ) recognizing the celebration) of the start of Caldecott ) Tunnel's 50th Year ) RESOLUTION NO. 86/689 WHEREAS, prior to this century, farmers and travelers had to endure hardships, taking chances on steep, dangerous and often impossible ways over the hills or travel long, inconvenient routes to reach areas in the Diablo Valley from the bay area; and WHEREAS, in 1895 the Merchant' s Exchange Club of Oakland promoted legislation and with the assistance of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties with planning and financing, the Contra Costa Tunnel became a reality on November 4, 1903; and WHEREAS, when it became apparent that the Contra Costa Tunnel would not meet the projected increase of traffic, the Supervisors of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties formed Joint Highway District #13 in 1928 and proceeded to develop plans for a low-level tunnel; and WHEREAS, on December 3, 1937 the new Broadway Low-Level Tunnels were opened and subsequently rededicated in the name of the late Thomas E. Caldecott, honoring him for his leadership as President of the Board of Directors of the Joint Highway District #13 ; and WHEREAS, the opening of the Caldecott Tunnel created opportunities for prime development, affording pleasant communitites and amenities, attracting residents and creating a superb business climate in Contra Costa County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County recognizes the celebration of the start of Caldecott Tunnel' s 50th year and extends best wishes to the Contra Costa County Historial Society for a successful event in honoring this auspicious occasion. PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 2nd day of December 1986.
