SUBJECT: Training and Equipment Needs for First
Responders in Toxic Material Emergencies
Supervisor Tom Powers advised the Board that during a
recent incident in Richmond in which three firefighters were exposed
to suspected harmful toxic materials , it was brought to his attention
that there is an inadequate level of training provided to first
responders in emergency situations where suspected toxic materials
are involved and that the proper equipment may not be available .
As recommended by Supervisor Torlakson, IT IS BY THE BOARD
ORDERED that the issue of level of training and appropriate equip-
ment for first responders in toxic material emergencies is REFERRED
to the County Administrator for review and report to the Board on
November 5 , 1985 .
