DATE: October 21, 1985 County
SUBJECT: COUNTY CONTRIBUTION FOR EQUIPMENT TO RECOGNIZE HEALTH SERVICES
AUXILIARY FUND RAISING EFFORTS
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION•
1 . Approve a one time allocation of $3 , 500 from general fund savings and
$3 , 500 in Hospital Enterprise funds to match $13 , 500 from the Health
Services Auxiliary to purchase urgently needed hospital equipment.
2. Direct the County Administrator to identify the savings for the
general fund portion from other budgets and prepare the necessary
transfer documents.
3 . Clear this item as a referral to the Committee.
BACKGROUND:
on September 21, 1985, the Health Services Auxiliary held a fund raiser to
provide for equipment to benefit patients of Merrithew Memorial Hospital.
The effort raised a net of $3 , 500. This funding was added to $10, 000
alreadv in the Auxiliary' s savings account towards funding a fetal
monitoring unit ( $8, 000) , a baby warmer ( $8,000 ) , and other priority
equipment items. In order to recognize the efforts of the volunteers and
to provide incentive and encouragement for further fund raising efforts,
the Board was asked to consider funding a matching amount. The item was
referred by the Board to the Finance Committee for its consideration on
October 21.
At the Finance Committee meeting, it was learned that purchase of the fetal
monitoring unit and baby warmer would be cost beneficial because the County
now rents this equipment for $50 a day for each item. If each item were
used every day, the purchase would pay for itself in less than a year.
A County match could provide for these two items as well as other essential
high priorities of the department.
To recognize the efforts of the Health Services Auxiliary and the savings
which will accrue from purchase of the highest priority items, the Finance
Committee recommends that a $7 ,000 match should be provided on a one time
basis; $3 , 500 from the Hospital Enterprise equipment budget and $3 ,500 from
general fund savings in other budgets.

Dear Sunne,
The Gourmet Extravaganza, which was held to benefit patients at.
Merrithew Memorial Hospital, was a huge success! We made a great deal
of money and also had a lot of fun. We especially appreciated your
attending.
During the party you mentioned that the County Board of Supervisors
might be willing to match the amount we took in. I would like to have
you give this serious consideration. We grossed $ 7417.52. For a
first time party we felt that was amazing. The staff support was to
be expected, but we were all amazed and pleased at the amount of
support given by the general public.
The Auxiliary is considering several different purchases: an ICU
telemetry machine, a fetal monitoring machine, and a number of smaller
purchases that would make things more pleasant for patients and staff.
I would appreciate vnything you could do to add to our fund as it will
allow us to make bigger and more significant purchases.
Thank you very much. "
Sincerely,
i
Nancy K. Hobert.
