Description of Medical Social Worker C - Duties
Conducts Intake Interview for all new families being screened; includes
psycho-social evaluation of family situation and securing medical and
developmental history. Provides overall coordination for screening
including follow-up.
Provides both crises intervention and ongoing casework service to families
with identified need, including individual and family counseling where
indicated. Includes counseling for siblings. Provides play therapy for
children in out-patient therapy.
Provides ongoing weekly support group for parents of children in program.
Focus of group is both social and emotional support and ongoing parental
information and training.
Provides ongoing follow-up of children and families in program including,
assistance in securing additional services as needed. For children ready
for discharge, locates appropriate program and assists with transition
including attending Individual Education Plan meetings for new program.
Provides liaison, advocacy, and coordination with other service systems
such as Regional Center, Crippled Childrens Services, Social Services,
and Public Education.
Participates as member of interdisciplinary team in weekly nursery meetings.
Provides input on psycho-social needs of child and family to staff as well
as current status of other community program affecting programming; provides
consultation to staff regarding special hard-to-solve counseling and
treatment problems.
Participates in community organization activities around identifying gaps in
service to developmentally delayed children and their families. Works with
other agencies in developing community constituency to affect program
development.
Provides in-service training to staff around social and psychological needs
of families with handicapped child; also around other services available to
family. Provides information and training to other medical facilities and
general public around needs of the developmentally disabled.
Supervises genetic counseling and/or social work interns.
Advanced C Level
The advanced skill and responsibility level is necessary because the in-
cumbent must:
1. Work independently without supervision from a social work supervisor;
2. Provide highly specialized counseling and social work services which are
needed by mentally retarded and developmentally disabled children and
their families, including expert knowledge of mental retardation, child
development developmental delays, and genetic counseling; and
3. Assist the Medical Director (Kathleen Malloy, M.D.) to provide counseling
to parents on a group or individual basis regarding extremely difficult
family adjustment problems regarding their mentally retarded and develop-
mentally disabled children.
4. Has professionally recognized clinical training and experience in dealing
with stages of grieving and coping and the psycho-therapeutic techniques
in clinical intervention to facilitate family's adjustment to the birth
and ongoing development of a handicapped child.
5. Must posess a minimum of a masters level degree to supervise genetic
counsel and master's in social work interns. (We have an ongoing committ-
ment to supervise students from the genetic counseling program at the
University of California, Berkeley, and have been approached by San
Francisco State University's MSW program to supervise their interns.)
6. To provide advanced, in-depth clinical social work services to develop-
mentally disabled infants and childrens' families with an emphasis on
Mental Health primary and secondary prevention.
