The Contra Costa County Office of Education's Neighborhood Youth Corps
operated the Private Industry Council's federally-funded Summer Youth
Employment and Training Program (SYETP). The program provides economically
disadvantaged youths with work experience and training in the public/nonprofit
sectors during the summer months. This summer the program helped over 1300
youths find work experience positions. Of those youths not continuing their
education at the end of the program, over 100 were placed into private sector
jobs. Over the past three years, the program has served over 3700 youths with
more than 300 going into permanent jobs.
Chevron USA, Inc. , has been a major benefactor of the Summer Youth Jobs
Program since its inception in 1983. This past summer, Chevron donated
$29,000 to the program which created 21 summer jobs. Over the past three
years, Chevron has subsidized 70 jobs in the private, public and nonprofits
sectors. The jobs have benefitted agencies who needed summer help due to
federal and state cutbacks in social programs.
The Private Industry Council requests the Board of Supervisors join with it
in recognizing the above three entities for their outstanding contributions
to enhancing youth employment.
