ADOPT Position Resolution # 20964 to establish the classification of Lead Fire Equipment
Mechanic (PMNC) (represented); allocate it on the Salary Schedule at QS5-1716 ($5,843 -
$6,442); add one (1) permanent full-time Lead Fire Equipment Mechanic (PMNC)
(represented)position; and cancel one (1) vacant Fire Equipment Mechanic (PMVC)
(represented) position #13770 in the Fire Protection District.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This action is projected to result in a reduction in salary and benefit costs within the Contra
Costa County Fire Protection District general operating fund.
BACKGROUND:
The Fire District apparatus shop has historically been managed by an incumbent in the
single position classification of Fire District Apparatus Manager. Upon that incumbent’s
retirement, Fire District management and labor have met and conferred, resulting in an
agreement to abolish the Fire District Apparatus Manager position and identifing potential
cost savings

BACKGROUND: (CONT'D)
and work performance improvements within the Apparatus shop. Further, the Lead Fire
Equipment Mechanic will be able to perform the tasks of a working mechanic, while also
directing and coordinating the work of other shop personnel. Until such time as the
revenue outlook improves and the organizational structure is reevaluated, the Lead Fire
Equipment Mechanic will report to the Assistant Chief of Support Services.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
The consequences of negative action is additional salary and benefit costs to the Fire
district (by filling the management position) and potential decreased efficiencies.
